Website Design and Digital Marketing Blog

When looking for ways to enhance your website’s SEO, you’ll find that investing in backlinks is a common piece of advice. So now, you are probably thinking, “what are backlinks and how do I get them?” Let us help.

What are Backlinks?

Backlinks are a highly effective technique of SEO that can better your organic ranking on Google. Similar to an outbound link – where you provide a link to yourself on your own website, a backlink is where another website places a link to your site within their content. Whilst this may seem like an easy technique, its benefits can be huge as these links can pass authority from one domain to another.

For example, if you were writing a blog post that features a product that people might like to buy for themselves, you might include the link of the product URL within your text. This link would be a backlink, directing users back to the company where they can purchase the product.

Although backlinks appear to be an instant way to advance your SEO, it’s important to note that not all backlinks have the same amount of importance and so vary in the success they can provide.

Domain Metric Scores and SEO

Many people run away with the idea that getting as many backlinks as possible is the best way to boost their SEO and whilst it will help, it’s not quite that straightforward. You could go ahead and purchase 100 backlinks from low-quality sites, which will, of course, make an improvement to your SEO, however, aiming for fewer backlinks with higher credibility is a better option.

High credibility backlinks come from websites with excellent domain metrics, which are more likely to pass on authority to increase your ranking on Google. Domain metrics are calculated using:

  • A domain’s authority
  • URL rating
  • Ahrefs ranking
  • Spam score
  • Number of referring domains and pages
  • Its own Backlinks
  • And many more

If you can get yourself backlinks on websites where you will have customers in common, users are more likely to be interested in following your link. For example, if you offer bespoke window shutters and you can place a backlink on a blog post about home improvements, organic improvement to your SEO is more likely.

Getting good-quality external links for your website can be one of the trickiest aspects of SEO but is also one of the most rewarding – regarding your Google ranking. Need help getting backlinks for your site? The team at Essex Interactive are here to help; get in touch today!
